This famous Visayan dance commonly performed as a ballroom dance traces its origin from another dance called Sibay, when a young lady named Kanang enthusiastically and energetically performed the Sibay during a baptismal party in Carmen, Lanaza in Surigao. Perhaps driven by intense emotion and energy, she improvised steps of the dance which drew resemblance on the movements of ducks or Itik. The people loved the duck-like interpretation of Kanang and thus, Itik-Itik was born.
